Joan and I are really heartened to see that there are so many movements around the world that are about ‘making this a kinder and gentler world’.

One that is exciting to us because Brock Tully here in Vancouver has a vibrant branch of this kindness movement, is The World Kindness Movement (WKM) worldkindnessmovement.org. I will quote what it says as the introduction to this site:

“The idea behind the World Kindness Movement (WKM) crystallized at a conference in Tokyo in 1997 when the Small Kindness Movement of Japan brought together like-minded movements from around the world. The WKM was officially launched in Singapore on 18 November 2000 at the 3rd WKM Conference. The mission of the WKM is to inspire individuals towards greater kindness and to connect nations to create a kinder world”.

Yeah! This is a movement to get fully behind!

May your days be full of kindness……………….

hugzz,

This morning I was writing to my daughter and telling her the story behind the hug video that I posted in the last blog. I decided to tell it here because it was so enlightening to me:

Hi Carrie,

Thanks so much for your enthusiastic support kiddo! It means a lot to me. I was so excited when Kate and Peter volunteered to come and help give out hugs and film it. I was dragging my feet in doing this and Joan was still in Holland so it had to be me alone. Late in the week I mentioned it to several friends but they were all doing something else. Besides it was supposed to rain all day.

I woke up that morning intending magic and miracles. Peter phoned and told me he and Kate would meet me at Granville Island. Not only did it not rain, but the sun shone near the end!! We chose a spot right outside the Net Loft. When we arrived, the magician was just leaving and when we were packing up, the musician busker was just coming. The people responded beautifully and it really was pure joy. I will not drag my heels next time. I will just intend magic and know it is there for me.

What a lesson that day was Carrie. I will confess the worst moment for me. When I was leaving Ann’s where I stayed the night before, I was taking many bags and boxes and a huge plastic bag full of colourful baskets for the hugs, red balloons, a large sandwich sign that I had done and then re-done just the way I wanted it and streamers to hang on the trees. I also had an order to deliver to our sales rep in North Van. I propped the bag of signs and balloons beside the car as I packed up the trunk – and drove off without it!! I did not even miss it until I drove into the lot at Granville. I was totally dejected and now I had to tell Peter and Kate that they had come for nothing. All I had were the hugs themselves.

My angel friends took this in stride and we marched off to Opus art store and got bristol board and markers. I had a few ribbons with me that we used to decorate them. Oh! I said, I don’t have the baskets to put the hugs in. No problem says my angel Kate, and off she goes to borrow a large basket from a wool shop nearby. The rest is now filmed in history…………………..

It just goes to show that people joining together in common purpose of spreading love make magical things happen. I still have to pinch myself………

lots of love,

mom

It was a magical afternoon yesterday as my friend Kate and I gave away free human hugs and clay hugs to all who were open to it. We were celebrating National Hug Day. Having a day to encourage hugging is an amazing thing and I think it reflects the opening of our hearts to love and understanding.

I am full of gratitude for arms to hug and great family and friends and strangers to share a hug with.

Every time you give a hug, you get a hug, so we were high on hugs by the end of the afternoon. What a rush!

Peter made this amazing video to share with all of you………………http://vimeo.com/m/35476313

A virtual hug to you all!

“”On January 23, 2012, we move out of the Chinese Year of the Rabbit into the prosperous and fertile Year of the Dragon”, says Collette Stefan. “Dragons represent potent and benevolent power as the ultimate ruler of all the elements, embodying primordial power as a catalyst for change and transformation, wisdom, infinity, longevity and movement through space.”

From all accounts, this will be an exciting year. This Year of the Dragon is a perfect opportunity to break out of the box and use our intuition to find answers from within.

May you all have long lives and much happiness.

People generally want to help. It’s a simple fact, proven in various studies, that It feels good to help others. However, the media often weigh us down with the news of wars and famine and floods and various traumas everywhere. This often overwhelms people and they don’t know how to make a difference in the face of the enormity of the situation.

I live in Vancouver British Columbia, Canada. It is a beautiful city and like all cities, it has it’s poor. Our newspaper The Vancouver Sun has taken on a project that has given the people of this city a way to make a difference. It is growing and growing.

This is how it started. One impassioned letter to the editor from a frustrated teacher about the underfed and under-clothed poor children in her east-end school brought in a huge outpouring of money, clothing and food for this school. The workers in the paper responded by starting an Adopt-A-School Fund for all the schools in the poorer districts of Vancouver. The column reporting on these schools and their donors is right at the front of the paper, so you can read good news with your morning coffee and start your day inspired instead of disheartened.

This is how it grew. There are many ways to help. Mail in a donation, phone it in, donate on-line, text in, even say “like” on Facebook and $4 gets donated right away. Each newly adopted school gets highlighted in the paper with the radio station or company or individual who took on supporting their programs.

Anybody can do this in their town or city. All it takes is the desire to make a difference and a letter to the editor. Why not be the one?

Yesterday I was at the local farmer’s market and I saw a table with many simple colourful little dolls. I was enchanted. When I heard the story behind them, I just had to get one for everyone I could think of.

After the Tsunami hit, many people lost their homes and their livelihoods. This caused a wave of compassion and love to circle the globe and help poured in.This little doll is one such gestures that transformed the lives of hundreds of fisherwomen in south India.

This little doll has a card which says Ttsunamika – a living symbol – www.tsunamika.org – she has been handmade by women, the women who live by the ocean, the women whose lives changed forever after the tsunami, the women who are exploring a new way of living, the women who are empowering themselves.”

The dolls are given away and you can donate if you wish.

The message of Tsunamika is the message of hugzz as well. The dolls and the hugs are much more than their size would suggest. They are powerful symbols of caring and sharing meant to travel around the world and open hearts to the understanding that we are all deeply connected to one another.
